A Walk Through WWII Map

This is a map that is designed to provide seven historic locations in Europe that define important moments during WWII. This map was created in ArcGIS Online along with excel spreadsheets. The excel spreadsheet contains six attributes or column headers and they consist of "Points of Interest", "latitude", "longitude", "location", "site_url", and "image_url". The latitude and longitude were attained from Google Maps after searching the site chosen. These attributes were then saved as a "CSV" file in order to be uploaded onto ArcGIS Online. The attributes appear on the pop up windows when a point of interest is selected and are also able to be edited to simplify map contents. This map is useful to users by providing points of interest with general information on the pop up windows including directions on how to reach the destination.

 Map Making Procedure

1. Create an excel spreadsheet with attribute fields containing, "Points of Interest", "latitude", "longitude", "location", "site_url", and "image_url
2. Add historic WWII sites across Europe to fill in the points of interest attribute
3. Add place of origin of sites to location attribute
4. Add sites to Google map to find graticule 
5. Add website link to the site_url attribute
6. Add image address link to web image attribute 
7. Save spreadsheet as a CSV file format
8. Startup a new ArcGIS Online map
9. Add new layer from file 
10. Upload the CSV file format to the map
11. Allow editing for the layers on the table of contents
12. Configure the pop up window setting by editing attributes and images 
13. Save the pop up window configuration
14. Change symbols to preference 
15. Save map 
16. Share map by selecting the everyone

Fire Hydrant Types at Bridgewater State University


The purpose of this application is to determine what kinds of fire hydrants are located on the campus of Bridgewater State University and their heights.  Click here to see the full map on ArcGIS Online.

After collecting the data of the type of hydrant the height was then measured with a tape measure from the ground to the top of the hydrant.

 This application can help by determining location of a hydrant, if it is a wet or dry barrel, which determines its vulnerability of freezing or not and the height of the hydrant, which plays a role with snow building up around it.

Loss of Prime Farmland in Foxborough, MA

According to Maggie Payne’s presentation on soils it is important to know where the primary soils are located in order to save and conserve them. Farmlands across America provide us with the food we eat, rural heritage, wildlife and biodiversity and environmental quality but as the primary soils are paved over by impervious surfaces due to urbanization we lose that soil for good.

The process was performed by extracting a mask of an area of study and then joining the attributes with the mapunit table that provided soil data from the geodatabase. The joining process provided us with information about the location of farmland soils. Below is table 1 showing the total area of farmland types for Foxborough Massachusetts.

The results of table 2 show the lost of farmland to be quite significant to table 1 that show the amount of farmland. The majority of the farmland lost is due to urbanization that causes impervious surfaces. 

Environmental Justice Areas

Toxic Sites in Watertown, MA

This map is a representation of the town of Watertown in Massachusetts that has a large amount of area that falls within the environmental justice boundaries. 

Finding the following values in square kilometers
Total area of the town of Watertown	10.6814 sq. Km.
Total area of Environmental Justice in the town of Watertown	3.048343 sq. Km.
Total area of the town that is non-EJ	7.633057 sq. Km.
Total EJ area that is within a 2000 meter buffer of a toxic site	3.048343 sq. Km.
Total non-EJ area that is within a 2000 meter buffer of a toxic site	7.633057 sq. Km.

Calculating the following percentages
Percent of the town that is EJ	29%
Percent of the town that is non-EJ	71%
Percent of EJ area that is within a 2000 meter buffer of a toxic site	100%
Percent of the non-EJ area is within 2000-meter buffer of a toxic site.	100%

The data layers used for this study were toxic sites in Massachusetts, the environmental justice areas in Massachusetts and town boundaries for Massachusetts in order to calculate the total area of Watertown, Ma.

 Looking at the map we conclude that Watertown has 10 unknown toxic sites that can play a role in the severity of the hazards they can cause along with the other toxic sites outside of Watertown that impose a threat to the non EJ areas.
